Celosia, also known as cockscomb, is a compact hybrid and is thought to have originated from Africa and India, as well as dry regions in North and South America. It is believed that Chinese herbalists would use celosia to stop bleeding and treat different diseases. Celosia is thought to symbolize humor, warmth and playfulness.
Celosia comes from the Greek word meaning to burn, which describes flame like blooms of the plant. The flowers bloom in the summer and can last through autumn. They are soft and velvety to the touch. The celosia's big, bright blooms come in a variety of colors, most commonly shades of red, yellow, orange, purple and pink. These plants reach an average height of 15 - 60cm.
Celosia require little attention. These plants prefer soil that is evenly moist with bright light. These flowers strive in hot, sunny conditions and an average room temperature of 60 - 75°F.
